Camelot Woods is located in the heart of Sullivan County, New York. This area is rich with attractions, natural beauty and history. In fact, the county’s roots date back to 1683. At the time, Sullivan County was part of Ulster County, which was one of the state’s first 12 counties. In 1809, it broke off to become an independent county. At this time, it was given its name to honor an American Revolutionary War hero, General John Sullivan. Sullivan also served as a judge and Governor of New Hampshire.

The county was sparsely populated for most of its earlier years, but this changed during the Industrial Revolution in the late 1800s. Power was generated by the movement of water through nearby rivers and streams, making Sullivan County a hub that offered many jobs to workers. However, industry evolved over time, and some of these jobs were relocated to other areas. At the same time, the economy transitioned into one that was more heavily reliant on tourism. Some of the more popular resorts at the time were established by Jewish immigrants from Europe. As a result, the area started being referred to as the Borscht Belt in the 1920s. Some of the resorts brought well-known celebrities to the area.

Today, Sullivan County is home to approximately 78,000 residents. The county seat is Monticello, and there are dozens of other smaller and larger communities throughout the area as well. As a resident of Camelot Woods, you are poised to enjoy all that Sullivan County offers.
